Stall holder profile – Edwina Woods

Edwina WoodsTell us a little bit about yourself and your business. What inspired you to start designing?

This is always a tough question! I love the romance and elegance that comes from wearing a hat. It transforms any occasion into something special whether that is a day at the races, a wedding, a ball or just going out for Sunday brunch.

I have been sewing from a very young age, my mum was a very good seamstress and clothing designer and I was always under her feet playing with fabrics and beads. At university I studied Bachelor of Arts in Jewellery designing/Silver smithing. I took some time off after a major car accident and before returning had a bit of time so started to learn the art or millinery. From my first hat I knew I wanted to grow my skills and turn it into a business. So fast forward 9 years and I am still making my beautiful pieces of art and now have a successful business.

What are your favourite pieces in your collection?

My favourite? That is a tough one! It’s like asking a mother who is her favourite child?! I do love my ‘Flower Power” Hats they are dramatic but still light and easy to wear.

I do have two hats that are very dear to me, the first hat I ever made. I still have her, and the hat I wore for the Canberra Black Opal Stakes Day in 2016 (pictured above).

Do you have any career/business highlights or achievements you’d like to mention?

Winner of the Canberra Canberra Black Opal Stakes Millinery Award 2016

Winner of the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Millinery Award 2008, 2009, 2010. They are the big ones, plus lots of country racing fashion on the field competitions.

Do you have any future plans of interest that you’d like to mention?

Future plans for Edwina Woods include expanding the product range to include clothing and an array of accessories to compliment my head-wear range. So watch this space.
